On May 19, an international environmental protection organization announced the new test results of the 2014 Brazil World Cup sports products purchased from 16 countries (regions) around the world. The three major sports brands Adidas, Nike, and Puma were all found to contain toxic chemical residues. Data shows that 81% of sneakers and 35% of jerseys were found to contain perfluorinated compounds and phthalates (commonly known as plasticizers). Among them, Adidas’ star product Predator sneakers were found to contain high levels of perfluorooctanoic acid. Nearly 15 times more than the standard.

From March to May this year, the organization purchased 33 products from Adidas, Nike, and Puma at brand stores and brand-authorized stores in 16 countries (regions) including China, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, and sent them to A qualified third-party independent laboratory conducts analysis and testing. The results showed that all products of the three companies contained residues of toxic and harmful substances such as perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPE) and phthalates (Phthalates) to varying degrees. Among them, Nike’s Tiempo sneakers were found to contain 5.93ug/m2 of perfluorooctanoic acid.

Perfluorinated compounds are often used in waterproof and anti-fouling coatings on textiles and are very difficult to degrade. Studies have shown that some perfluorinated compounds, such as perfluorooctanoic acid, are bioaccumulative and can continuously accumulate in the human body through the food chain, disrupt the endocrine system, harm reproductive organs, and may lead to reduced sperm count and infertility, as well as carcinogenic risks. Fluorine-based products like these will be banned globally in 2015. Now the textile industry is launching fluorine-free waterproofing agents one after another. It is an expert in fluorine-free waterproofing agents with 7 years of experience. It meets the requirements of ZDHC for zero emission of harmful substances. It does not contain APEO, PFOS, PFOA, etc. Contains organic halogens and does not contain fluorocarbons.

The combined global market share of Adidas and Nike in football supplies exceeds 80%. China is not only the main overseas production base of these two companies, but also the world’s second largest consumer market after the United States. In 2013 alone, Adidas’ annual sales in China exceeded 1.6 billion euros. Nearly half of the samples tested this time were produced in China.
