Recently, the functional membrane team of the Polymer Division of Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, prepared a double-layer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane with an outer layer enriched with antibacterial silver ions through double-layer co-extrusion technology.

According to reports, researchers from this team have previously prepared bicontinuous PVDF membranes and hollow fiber membranes with good antibacterial properties through non-solvent induction-assisted thermal phase separation. On this basis, in order to reduce the amount of antibacterial agents loaded with silver molecular sieves dosage to improve the antibacterial efficiency of polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber membranes. The researchers further enriched the silver-loaded molecular sieve in the outer layer of the double-layer membrane through double-layer co-extrusion, and prepared it using a dry spray-wet spinning method. PVDF hollow fiber membrane with antibacterial properties was developed. The antibacterial agent content of the double-layer membrane prepared this time is only 54% of that of the single-layer membrane, but it shows similar or even better antibacterial performance and anti-bacterial adhesion performance, without any decrease in water flux and other properties.

As a membrane material with excellent performance, PVDF is widely used in the field of separation membranes. The microfiltration and ultrafiltration hollow fiber membranes prepared by it have achieved large-scale industrial production in household water purification systems, sewage treatment, seawater desalination, etc. However, during the use of the membrane, in addition to organic and inorganic substances, microorganisms are also one of the main factors causing membrane fouling. In view of membrane fouling caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, it is particularly important to prepare membranes with antibacterial properties.
